What is Bovine Respiratory Disease?
Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) occurs when the immune system in the respiratory tract becomes compromised by a combination of viral and bacterial pathogens. This can be compounded by environmental and management factors. The resulting bronchopneumonia can lead to nasal and ocular discharge, depression, anorexia, fever, and coughs.
BRD can occur at any stage during the animals’ lifecycle all the way from the calf-house to the finishing pen, but the two most common illnesses in calves are enzootic pneumonia in dairy calves and shipping fever in beef calves which can both occur both pre- and post-weaning. Both these can lead to significant mortality and financial loss to farmers.
Stress factors also play a major part such as during transportation and co-mingling of calves from different sources and the stress caused can have a significant impact. This happens each year as beef calves are weaned and are sold on through cattle marts to the beef finisher. Key aspects of good management which can help reduce respiratory disease outbreaks in cattle are adequate colostrum feeding to new-born calves, appropriate housing, adequate ventilation, minimised temperature fluctuations, biosecurity and good nutrition.
