What is Diarrhoea in calves?
Calf diarrhoea or scour (enteritis) occurs when intestinal fluids are not absorbed appropriately in the intestines where they normally should be. Anything that affects the intestine’s ability to absorb fluid may result in diarrhoea or other digestive upsets. If calf diarrhoea is occurring, it is important to diagnose the underlying cause as it is most likely causing a production loss in the herd. Possible causes of diarrhoea could either be environmental, nutritional or infectious or a combination of factors.
- Nutritional diarrhoea can be caused by lack of colostrum, incorrectly mixed milk, too much milk, etc
- Infectious diarrhoea could be caused by viruses (eg coronavirus and rotavirus), bacteria (eg E coli and Salmonella,) protozoa (eg Cryptospiridium and Coccidia) and by parasites such as worms.
How can ENTEREX help with calf diarrhoea, scour and digestive upsets
Natural Farm Health has taken up the challenge to help farmers in their battle against calf scour. Over the past seven years, we have developed ENTEREX which can be used with newborn calves to support their own resistance against the various infectious challenges they may encounter. This product has proved successful on several farms that previously suffered major challenges from calf scour and embodies the principle that “prevention is better than cure”. We can now confidently offer Enterex to farmers as a tool in their armory against the ever-present challenge from calf scour and diarrhoea.
Enterex can also be used in conjunction with our other product SCOUREX which should be used on those animals if calf scour is already a problem.
