What is calf scour?
Enteritis which occurs in the gastrointestinal tract often involving bacteria, viruses and protozoa can cause calf scour or diarrhoea. If in the first 28 days of life (neonatal period), this can lead to an extremely high mortality rate due to the often-accompanying malnutrition.
Diarrhoea not only involves the animal, but also the environment, the nutrition, and infectious agents involved. If not treated quickly and appropriately its consequences impact on the subsequent growth, weight gain and loss of genetic potential of recovered animals.
When a calf has diarrhoea, there is a huge loss of fluids and electrolytes from its body, and administration of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs alone do not correct this imbalance.
The most common infectious agents which can cause diarrhoea in calves are E Coli, Salmonella, and three enteric pathogens Cryptosporidium, Rotavirus and Coronavirus.
How can SCOUREX help?
SCOUREX aids the restoration of the natural balance in the calf gut. As soon as the first signs of calf scour become apparent, SCOUREX should be given to the calf to support the condition of the digestive system.
Key aspects of good management which can help reduce Neonatal Calf Diarrhoea outbreaks in calves are adequate quality colostrum feeding to new-born calves, appropriate housing hygiene, stocking rate, adequate ventilation, minimised temperature fluctuations, biosecurity, and good nutrition.
