What is enteritis in cattle?
Enteritis is diarrhoea or scour and occurs when intestinal fluids are not absorbed appropriately in the intestines where they normally would be if there was not a problem. Anything that affects the intestine’s ability to absorb fluid may result in diarrhoea or other digestive upsets. If diarrhoea is occurring, it is important to diagnose the underlying cause as it is probably causing a production loss in the herd. Possible causes could either be nutritional or infections.
- Nutritional diarrhoea can be caused by acidosis (grain), lush green feed, cobalt or selenium deficiency, copper toxicity, or chemical or plant poisoning.
- Infectious diarrhoea could be caused by worms, viruses eg BVD or bacteria such as Salmonella or Yersinia
Prevention of enteritis in cattle
Once the cause has been established, it will be possible to draw up a plan about how to prevent and minimise its reoccurrence. This could involve reviewing rations, grazing plans, worm management and biosecurity.
How can ENTERITE help with diarrhoea, scour and digestive upsets
Over the past 20 years, our farming customers have used ENTERITE on many occasions where diarrhoea has either occurred on an individual cow or within the whole herd. This may have been caused by feed and/or known infections present on the farm. Natural Farm Health has developed a protocol which can be used if diarrhoea occurs which can assist the severity of the case and in many cases change the outcome. This includes the use of ENTERITE and SCOUREX.
